Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. and Novartis AG are developing a new class of anti-cancer drug, the blockbuster cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor, and are also developing an alternative drug, in which the drug is combined with the statin statin, to help lower elevated cholesterol levels.
The drug, Crestor, was the third to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in the treatment of adult patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HF-AD) or hypercholesterolaemia (HD-C).
The new product is called Lipitor, which is sold under the brand name Lipitor CR by Novartis and made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in the US.
Lipitor will help to lower the LDL cholesterol, a significant risk factor for HFF-AD, by inhibiting the HMG CoA reductase enzyme, thereby lowering the LDL cholesterol level by up to 80% in most patients.
Lipitor was developed by GSK and is being manufactured by AstraZeneca plc. It is currently available in the US under the brand name Amneal, by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
The company is planning to conduct a phase 3 clinical trial in the US. It will conduct a phase 2b clinical trial in the US, and will conduct a phase 3 trial in the US.

“The goal of this study is to determine whether the development of new drugs to lower LDL cholesterol is a result of greater drug development or a consequence of the drug’s use as a lipid-lowering agent, or both.”
Crestor is approved to treat HFF-AD, HHD-C, and LDL-C.
“A drug’s development is not always a result of drug use. A drug’s development may be based on other aspects of its pharmacology, side effects, drug interaction, and drug interactions.”
The drug’s half-life of 7.5 hours after administration is one half of that of an orally administered drug.
“In the case of an orally administered drug, this half-life is about 10 hours, and in the case of an orally administered drug that is in a high dose range, about 8 hours,” said Dr. Shah.

“This drug is currently indicated for HFF-AD, HHD-C, and LDL-C, and has shown promising results in lowering LDL cholesterol,” Dr. Shah said.
