The first statin to offer a new indication for heart failure has been approved in Europe.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) granted approval in the U. S. for Crestor (rosuvastatin) 40 mg to be prescribed to patients with congestive heart failure to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults over the age of 40.
The drug was first approved for use in adults over the age of 65 and has since been on the market in Europe for two years.
Crestor is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with at least two heart failure symptoms.

AstraZeneca is the only US pharmaceutical company that is not a manufacturer of Crestor.
The EMA has been conducting a review of the drug to determine whether it meets the necessary standards for approval and if it is appropriate for patients to continue taking the drug after they have had their heart failure symptoms controlled.
In clinical trials, Crestor demonstrated efficacy in reducing the risk of serious heart-related complications in patients with congestive heart failure. The drug is also effective in treating atrial fibrillation with preserved ejection fraction, which can lead to a heart attack or death.
The FDA has also approved Crestor to treat patients with coronary heart disease. The approval was based on data from a small study that showed an association between high doses of Crestor and a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke, which is not true for other statin drugs.

For the most part, AstraZeneca has been monitoring Crestor as it is considered the most effective statin in the treatment of patients with heart failure. However, the EMA is reviewing the data and will decide whether to continue prescribing it for patients with congestive heart failure.
